Rewriting character skills

Character skills were clunky, let's improve them!

Overview

After some play testing, it's clear that people don't use skills that often because the weapons carry most of the damage and the skills are boring once builds improve.

I went through each character and brainstormed ideas to improve the base skills, along with adding skill upgrades as you level up characters so that throughout a run you can choose one of two upgrades to make the skills more meaningful.

One of my main bars for a good skillset is "would I like playing with this character during a run"? If not, probably needs some rework.

Cupcake is the only character that got a slight nerf but kept most of the base kit because it's fun.

Case Study - Candy Bar

The old skillset was quite boring:

  • Offensive: Spin a wrapper around that hits 4 times for some damage and knocks fruit back
  • Utility: Create an aura that gives allies +25% speed and +20% attack speed

These both have very little "wow" factor or cool gameplay moments - it's just press and move on, and the utility skill especially doesn't do much.

Fast forward to the new skillset:

  • Offensive: Run super fast and leave a Soured trail behind (DoT damage)
  • Utility: Create an aura that spreads Soured to adjacent enemies one time, heals from Soured ticks, and gives everyone x1.4 status mastery and x1.2 move speed.

This is so much better because it's more visually appealing, plus the kit synergizes well without really needing each other to use.
